not malaysia... but chinatown!

tuesday 4 august

a lot of my friends left me for penang, malaysia today.
they tried to convince me to book a flight with them, but the trip was highly disorganized and i for one didn't want to die before singapore national day [aug 9]. oh well, i'll see them on friday.

instead, i got my student pass (which allows me to not get kicked out of the country!). i would put a picture of it up, but i feel like there's valuable information on there i shouldn't be letting the whole world see...

for dinner, i hung out with matias and a girl, katinka from germany, who arrived yesterday.
we went to a fancy restaurant on club street near chinatown (drinks, appetizers, and a main meal for 25$ a person) and then went off to do touristy things.

the restaurant we went to, indochine, was recommended in multiple guidebooks. it was pretty tasty and rather chic and trendy looking.

after dinner we went around chinatown. this is right outside the chinatown mrt.

just like little india where the road signs are in hindi, chinatown's road signs are in english and chinese! being the linguistics dork that i am... i had to take a picture!

this picture is of chinatown's food street. there are vendors selling all kinds of foods at the different stalls. i had aloe vera & green apple juice! mmm, tasty! down food street was the biggest mass of white people i have ever seen since coming to singapore.

there are also tons of stalls to buy souvenirs. although now that i think about it, it's pretty silly getting chinese things in just chinatown becuase 77% of singapore is chinese...

however, i was able to get a teapot for 엄마... this is the teapot i got: a traditional chinese teapot. the details on it looked really cool, especially the dragon!

unfortunately, what i was actually looking for... was this teaset. the traditional malay-chinese [peranakan] one. at the time, i really thought they were the same thing... but seeing it online... they don't look very similar. now i'm very upset and will go in search of this one at east coast. too bad i can't return the other one...
